We have taken a sustainable approach to our business because we believe in a better way forward, one that puts the planet and its people before profits. It turns out (happily), we are not alone! Wuxly Movement is proud to announce that we have joined the Certified B Corporation™ community and have officially earned our B Corp™ status for our sustainable practices and corporate actions.

Our Journey

What started out as an idea for a Canadian made vegan winter parka has evolved to a truly sustainable Canadian clothing brand. With our recent B Corp™ certification, we are proud to join the ranks of other sustainable clothing brands from around the world.

The B Corp Certification is a highly selective status. Companies must document their positive impact to qualify and undergo verification every three years to maintain their Certification. In joining other sustainable clothing brands in the B Corp community, we are working towards reducing inequality, lowering levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities, and the creation of high-quality jobs with dignity and purpose.

The results of our certification helped to identify the areas we can work on to continue to reduce our carbon footprint and create a more ethical and responsible economy for all. We’re committed to continually improving and are presently applying these learnings to our business process.

The goal of sustainability is a journey, rather than a destination, and requires a business to continually evolve their business practices to put the planet and its people ahead of profits. As with any sustainable clothing brand, there will always be room for improvement, and we will forever be striving for better. Our focus for 2022 is centered on three main areas that we feel will make the most impact: transportation, a zero-waste approach, and local sourcing.

Transportation

The life cycle of a product, from raw material to end of use has an impact on the planet and its people each step of the way. Of particular concern is the impact of transportation in the shipping of goods, which is a particularly large contributor to CO2 emissions. When it comes to textiles, there are few local options to source from and none that meet the technical performance required for lasting outerwear. We source our textiles from Blue Sign approved mills to ensure they meet the highest standards for ethical and environmental production but there’s still a major hit to our carbon output in the transportation from offshore producers to Toronto, Canada for manufacturing.

What we can do to help reduce our carbon footprint is to choose freight and shipping methods with lower environmental impact. According to Good on You’s report on Fashion’s Carbon Footprint, “a big ship will emit about 10 grams of carbon dioxide to transport 1 metric ton of cargo 1 kilometer. That’s roughly half as much as a train, one-fifth as much as a truck and nearly a fiftieth of what an airplane would emit”. Ship and train are the lowest carbon emission options.

With our advance planning in 2022 we have aligned our production schedule to have all materials sent by ship and train to reduce our emissions.

Zero Waste Approach

We are working to reduce our impact directly in our supply chain, including in the design process. For years, our design team has implemented a Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle approach to material consumption. We manufacture in limited quantities to reduce our consumption and reuse any excess materials and trims in future product design and production.

Local Sourcing

We are proudly made in Canada, from design to manufacturing, we work with local talent to produce our sustainable outerwear. As we like to say, the Canadians who make our parkas are as important to our business and the customers who wear them. To ensure we are giving back as much as we get from our country and our community, we have implemented a local purchasing policy for all ancillary expenditures. Outside of the outerwear materials, we procure a large amount of goods and services to support our business. Our new policy prioritizes finding a local solution and investing back into local businesses that help our community thrive. As we continue to grow, our community will grow with us.
